Oil seals often called as grease, fluid or dirt seals have close spaces between stationary and moving components in mechanical equipment, helping prevent lubricant escape. They also stop harmful contaminants from entering machinery, particularly in severe environments. Vital components of practically every type of machine and vehicle in operation, oil seals protect all types of precision-constructed, close-fitting ball, sleeve and roller bearings. In precision bearings, oil seals help prevent lubricants from escaping the bearings or a specific area. The Timken National 473336 oil and grease seal is a Type 47, spring-loaded multi-lip radial shaft seal from the National 470000 series. It is designed for a 1.718 in (43.637 mm) shaft and measures 2.565 in (65.151 mm) outside diameter x 0.500 in (12.700 mm) overall width. The recommended housing bore is 2.561 in (65.049 mm). The 473336 uses a nitrile sealing lip and Timken Redicoat construction to help retain lubricant while excluding dirt, moisture and other contaminants from bearings and rotating equipment. It is commonly cross-referenced with Dexter 10-19 and SKF 17144. One common application is the wheel hub on 3,500-lb trailer axles using a #84 spindle. In this configuration, the 473336 / Dexter 10-19 seal is commonly used with an L68149/L68111 inner tapered roller bearing set (Timken SET17) and an L44649/L44610 outer tapered roller bearing set (Timken SET4). Because 473336 is a dimensional shaft seal used in multiple applications, always verify shaft diameter, housing bore and seal width before replacement.
